She asked: Our mass media world sends us the message to monopolize everything and to have everything. Does this mean that the spiritual world, characterized by abundance, affectionate caring, and sharing with everyone must be antagonistic with the ‘real’ world, characterized by material scarcity and the constant drive to have as much of everything as possible?

Answer: A remarkable British economist, E. F. Schumacher, has written a book about this from the perspective of Small is Beautiful.

True success, independent of our economic resources, is to dedicate our life to activities that encourage and support the spirit, independent of isolated profits. Truly successful people have profits that involve all their being and obtain a style of life that benefits, in addition to the individual, all those around him. As David R. Hawkins says in his book, Power vs. Force, truly successful people are courteous and considerate with everyone, treating all as equals. "Truly successful people see their position as a responsibility, an obligation to exert their influence for the greater benefit of all". He explains, "Success elevates us or destroys us, depending on how we integrate success in our personalities. If we are proud or humble; if we are egotistical or thankful; if we consider ourselves better than others because of our talents or we consider our talents a gift, and for them we are thankful — these are the determining factors.”

Question: When we speak of relinquishments, are we saying that we will relinquish worldly things?

It means that we learn to live with things we really need, whatever our needs might be. As Peace Pilgrim said, "material things have to be brought to their proper place. They are here to be used, to be used well; that’s why they exist. But when things have fulfilled their purpose, we can then give them away, perhaps to someone who needs them even more.” Otherwise, things possess us.

Let’s speak of another type of possessiveness. Peace said, "When we think we possess people we have the tendency to direct their lives, which leads to extreme disharmony. Only when we realize that people must live according to their own internal motivations, only when we acknowledge they direct their lives do we discover that we are able to live in harmony with them.” Here we are speaking of a true respect for others. Each of us is solely responsible for our own life. As the great Mexican leader Benito Juárez said wisely, "Respect for the rights of others is Peace.”

More about relinquishments in my next note.

Returning to center requires discipline, she says. To simplify conversations this week, consider:

Am I communicating honestly? Do I mean what I say?

Do I listen to others aware of their body language as well as their words?

Can I be present with someone without talking constantly?

Do I respect the importance of silence in my life and in interactions with others?

And from my experience, I would like to add:

Do I look directly into the eyes of those I talk with?

Am I receptive to the points of view of others even when they differ from mine?

Do I make an effort to enter into their own perspective?

Can I enter the experience with the whole of myself, with full concentration?

I would enjoy knowing your reflections on this topic!

Today I am reflecting about the times when it is better to speak or simply remain silent given the circumstances of the moment as we embrace wholeness in living. Years ago I had a good conversation with a friend about discovering our inner beauty and he brought to our dialogue some key ideas from Eckhart Tolle in his book ‘Stillness Speaks’. There, this famous author said, “True intelligence operates silently” and “Stillness is where creativity and solutions to problems are found”.

“Silence is the dignity of a seeking soul”, said Marc Edmund Jones.

I wish to share with you this day my current reflections:

I am Present. You are Present. Here and Now.

Slowing down pace in living contributes to the process.

Time of quiet Meditation enhances staying present.

Peaceful listening to music inspires stillness.

Be still and know that PEACE is here!

Be still and KNOW…

Be STILL…

BE.

Wisdom comes from within.
