The Power of Silence

Silence is a resource that has been used from time immemorial to enter into the depths of our being. World religions have acknowledged its value through its various spiritual perspectives and practices as an integral part of the ideal service of spiritual worship. In Christianity, exists the silence of contemplative prayer. In Buddhism, allowing the mind to become silent relates with spiritual enlightenment. In Islam, the Sufis speak of the relevance of finding silence within. In Hinduism, including the teachings of Vedanta and the various paths of yoga, teachers speak of the meaning of silence for inner growth. In the Religious Society of Friends or Quakers, silence is part of their worship service and an opportunity for the divine to speak in the heart and mind of the individual.

In recent conversation, my friend William Jáuregui shared his appreciation, “silence is the fertile ground for the soundest speech”. I like what he says!

Silence is a will-controlled receptivity in the discipline of spiritual activity. I wish to share with you some of my recent words for reflection:

  • What have I discovered this day in the profound joy of the golden silence?
  • When I listen in the stillness of life… the small voice within comes alive!

I invite you to share with me, how do you enter into the power of the silence?

I too have learned of the importance of silence. I begin each day in silence and surrender. I begin each day within. I have chosen a woman from the Society of Friends as my Spiritual Director because of their understanding of the importance of silence. I don’t ask for anything in this silence, I am just there with the Divine, I am the Divine in this silence, no longer two but one. This silence is my bread for my soul. Everything comes alive for me in this silence.

Thank you for what you do for the world. Peace.

Wow, this is actually useful input. Appreciation for posting it. I really assume, it is important to write in relation to it as I think that not just I as being a enthusiastic Buddhist will win something from it but maybe people will as well.

Hi Vicki, “I am the Divine in this silence”, you say, and I treasure your insight.

Hi Norene, Thanks for your comment. Your words inspire me to say, “We are all ONE”. The Buddha is also most meaningful to me.
